Cannes vs St. Tropez: Which French Riviera Town Should You Visit?

Spread the love

Two towns Both glamorous. Both on the French Riviera. Both named in the same breath by anyone who has ever dreamed of the South of France. So when you only have a few days, how do you choose between Cannes vs St. Tropez?

The honest answer is that they are very different places — and the right one for you depends entirely on what kind of traveller you are.

The Vibe | Cannes vs St. Tropez

Cannes is a proper city — sophisticated without feeling exclusive. St. Tropez is a village that became a legend. In the early morning before the day trippers arrive, it is easy to see why Brigitte Bardot never wanted to leave. But in July and August, St. Tropez is extremely busy and extremely expensive.

Winner for atmosphere: St. Tropez (but only outside peak summer)

The Beaches

Cannes beaches are mostly private with imported sand. Good for people-watching, not exceptional by Riviera standards. The real find is Île Sainte-Honorat, a short ferry ride away.

St. Tropez has Pampelonne Beach — a four-kilometre arc of fine sand with the clearest aquamarine water on the entire Riviera.

Winner for beaches: St. Tropez, clearly

Getting There

Cannes wins easily. The TGV from Paris takes 5.5 hours. From Nice, a 40-minute train costs €6. St. Tropez has no train station and no airport — come by boat from Cannes (best option, ~2 hours) or brave the summer road traffic.

Winner for value: Cannes
